I’m reading it now, a little over halfway through but moving slowly. I can see the net being laid for his enemies, but he hasn’t yet made his move. (I had to stop reading your post once you got into “spoiler territory”!) I really like it, but there’s a fine line between slow and deliberate when it comes to pacing. I read somewhere that Dumas was paid by the word/installment for COMC; I’m not sure if that’s true but in some sections, I start to wonder… nevertheless, I find myself at various times during the workday wishing I could stop and read for a few hours, so that speaks in the book’s favor.
I loved this post! Count of Monte Cristo is a great book. Have you seen the 2026 PBS Masterpiece miniseries? Would highly reccomend.
I'm going to start going through some of the adaptations.
While I was never one to shy away from classic literature as a child, The Count of Monte Cristo remains one of my favorite stories.
I hope someday to see a live performance of the play.
It's hard not to love it.
